During term 3 Room 6 has been learning about the properties of materials. As an extension of this we learnt how to make our own paper. First we soaked scraps of paper in buckets of water. While the paper was soaking we made a deckle and frame on which to form our new sheets of paper. This put our woodworking skills to the test. Next the paper was blended to a fine pulp, until the blender broke. Then we added the pulp to trays of water and used the deckle and frame to scoop out the paper, creating sheets of recycled paper. It is a messy and time-consuming process, but we ended up with enough paper to make booklets for Fathers’ Day. We experimented with colours and adding things to the paper to create special sheets of paper.
